For those looking for an alternative 4 stroke engine to the Rotax 912 and Jabiru engines John Pescod of UL Power Engines from Belgium could have just what you are looking for the UL260i.

It is a modern direct drive, boxer style, 4 cylinder, 2600 CC, 95 HP, light weight, air cooled, 3300 RPM aircraft engine, that features a fully electronic ignition and multipoint fuel injection (FADEC) system as standard equipment.

This computer controlled electronic engine management system has been used in the automotive rally industry for over 15 years. The system monitors and automatically adjusts for engine temperature, oil temperature, air temperature, and is pressure compensated so the pilot only has to start the engine, and work the throttle control. The FADEC system automatically adjusts for the fuel mixture etc for optimum operation.

The engine components and crankshaft are all dynamically balanced, which gives a very smooth vibration free engine installation. The engine features a dual automotive style CDI ignition system, which is so efficient that during a mag check the pilot will generally not notice any difference in the engine rpm.

The engine uses a wet sump system, with an oil cooler. The oil system has an oil thermostat in the system located directly behind the oil filter, which will bring the engine temperature up to operating temperature in about 5 minutes.

The original development and testing started nearly 5 years ago, with first engine production and delivery of engines to customers in 2006. Currently 35 engines have been delivered to customers, flying on nearly 30 different types of aircraft. For ease of mounting the engine is supplied with 4 mounting positions that are identical to that use on the Jabiru engine.

Currently there is one engine with over 1300 hours on it, but the factory has set a 500 hour inspection period on the engine for their first customers as a precautionary procedure.

Three engines have been sold to U.S. customers that are being installed on a Sonex, Europa, and Avid Flyer.
