If you  have been surfing the internet and watching video on lightsport aircraft you have probably come across a clip of an Alaskan Bush Plane pilot flying a Savage lightsport aircraft, skimming across the water with his wheels, landing on a sandbar, taxi over the boulders and taking off again.

At the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo Bill Duncan owner of Alaskan Bushwheel had a display of the tires that make this possible. According to Bill many lightsport aircraft tail dragger pilots are running his new lightweight Airstreak series of tires developed specifically for the lightsport aircraft market.

The Airstreak series of tires weigh in between 18 and 24 lbs depending on the size. They are totally different than any tire that I have ever seen used on our style of aircraft in that they let objects like rocks to actually imbedded themselves into the tire, rather than rebounding and rolling over them, which allows the plane to move over them. Once over the tire then comes back to it's original shape.

This allows pilots to taxi and take off from some very hostile terrain, and with experience skip across short distances of water, extending shorter landing and take off areas. Also the tires take the abuse of the rough field landings without passing the loads back on to the landing gear and airframe.

The tires have a 100 % Kevlar cord that is virtually uncuttable, although bears have been known to chew on them!

The tires are designed to fit only 600 x 6 wheels, such as those produced by Matco.
