Quicksilver Sprint II pilot report.

As an instructor you want the best for your students.

If I had a student 55 years of age or older who wanted a recommendation on the safest, most fun flying light sport aircraft in the world it would be the Quicksilver Sprint II.
This little beauty has proven time and time again that a pilot can do some of the dumbest things imaginable and it will save his butt - every time! It doesn't fly fast enough that a pilot can get lost easily. It lands slow enough that he can get in and out of just about anywhere, and even if he screws up he just thumps the ground, usually only bending a couple of tubes which are cheap and easy to replace.

The rudder and ailerons give excellent cross wind control, and even without a fuselage it will come out of the sky like a rock in a side slip. The 68 inch prop gives plenty of thrust and at cruise is relatively quiet. In fact a friend of mine uses his two place as a single place to fly with Whooping Cranes for a research project, and filming.

He reports that at 4200 rpm and a little nose up attitude the plane flies along under full control at 22 mph! Fuel is probably the biggest consideration as the standard tank only gives about an 1.5 hours of safe flying. But larger tanks, as well as seat tanks are available to extend the time and range.

On floats with electric start, extra fuel tanks, battery, etc I would go with a 582 and a three blade prop. Another thing I would invest in is a set of shoulder harnesses.

With a windscreen or front fairing it is quite comfortable to fly in winter with skis. For storage and on floats my choice would be the strut braced version.
