Acrolite 1T tri-plane light sport aircraft, by

Ron Wilson built a tri-plane
because "no one has designed and built a new tri-plane since WW1 so why not?"
Using his award winning light sport aircraft the Acrolite as a
starting point, Ron began to design and build the Acrolite 1T Tri-plane. |
|
Of course one of the advantages he had was in the new
stronger, lighter weight materials available today. While the construction
is basically the same as the Acrolite a fibreglass skin is used instead of
plywood on the wings, for a much smoother surface.
Power for the proto type 1T is supplied by a Rotax 582,
65 HP liquid cooled engine using a 2.58 to 1 reduction drive and a two
blade wood prop. Controls are standard three axis, stick and rudder, with
the ailerons located on the CENTER wings only. According to Ron aileron
response is a little sluggish initially, and the roll rate is not as fast
as the bi-plane, but the turning radius is a lot smaller.
Cruise comes in at around 90 mph, and the Acrolite 1T
powered by the Rotax 582 will nearly stay with the Rotax 80 HP 912 equipped
Acrolite bi-plane in a 1,000 foot climb out. Stall recovery requires the
pilot to use proper stall recovery technique, and on landing the tri-plane
does not have the tendency to float in ground effect like the bi-plane
version.
